The RSPCA is reminding people to keep dogs away from chocolate
People in Essex are being asked to keep an eye on their pets as well as wildlife more generally over the bank holiday weekend.
Animal welfare charity RSPCA is urging people to make sure their animals don't get into any Easter treats, as well as be aware of wildlife while taking part in any festive fun.
Keep chocolate away from dogs
Dr Jane Tyson is from the charity. She explains some of the things to keep in mind: "keep chocolate safely away from animals. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs so if we're out and about with our dogs, or even if we're at home during the Easter weekend, we always need to keep chocolate safely out of the reach of dogs", she said.
According to Dr Tyson, it's important to be aware of wildlife during events like Easter egg hunts too: "people should make sure they discard of any litter to make sure it doesn't pose a danger to animals.
"They should also take care not to cause any damage to habitats by doing things like running through any undergrowth and also avoid causing any disruption to birds who might be nesting in hedgerows", she added.
Avoid impulse purchases
Dr Tyson also stressed the importance of not making an impulse purchase and buying any festive furry friends such as rabbits: "people need to make sure they're fully committed in terms of both the time and finances to care for that pet for the rest of their lives", she said.
