Driver who fled the scene sentenced for M25 crash
Police identified Iram Boubekeur from saliva left on an airbag
A man who fled the scene of a crash on the M25 on January 12 last year has been sentenced.
Just after midnight on the evening of the crash, a grey BMW crashed with an Iveco van, whilst driving towards the M11 at junction 27.
The car driver then fled the scene, despite serious damage to both vehicles, with the van landing on its side.
The van driver suffered minor injuries.
After leaving the scene of the crash, the registered owner of the BMW was issued a notice of intended prosecution, and continued to deny involvement by supplying an unknown person as the driver, claiming to have sold the car just days earlier.
However, due to saliva on the airbag, Chigwell Roads Policing Unit and Road Policing Prosecution Team identified 22-year-old Iram Boubekeur as the driver, leading to a court hearing.
He was found guilty of failing to nominate the driver, failing to stop and report a collision, careless driving and leaving a car in a dangerous position.
At sentencing at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Thursday, February 22, Boubekeur, of Emlyn Road, Hammersmith and Fulham, London was ordered to complete 300 hours of community service.
As well as this, he's been disqualified from driving for 9 months, had to pay fines totalling £224 and has been given six penalty points on his licence.
Officer in the case PC Joe Goodwin said:
“Iram Boubekeur went to great lengths to avoid being identified as the driver at the time of the collision, and even denied the offence right up to the last minute.
“He claims to have panicked and fled, but he was complicit in trying to avoid interactions with police. But given the forensic evidence, it was impossible for him to deny driving the car.”
