A dog who was taken in by the RSPCA in Wethersfield will be appearing on TV tonight (27 July).

Lila, a seven-year-old Shar Pei, was being cared for by neighbours after her owner moved away and left her behind.

She was rescued by Inspector Jess Dayes in Essex and taken to the RSPCA Danaher Animal Home for a check over.

Vets soon realised she had some issues with her eyes, as well as inflamed ears.

Lila was suffering from entropion which is where the eyelid rolls in towards the eyeball causing fur and eyelashes to rub and irritate the surface of the eye.

This is said to be a common problem with Shar Pei dogs because of their excessive skin folds and often needs surgery to correct.

She had already had an operation as a puppy to get rid of the excess skin around her eyes, but needed another operation which RSPCA vet Robert Lees carried out.

Robert said:

"The trouble with these dogs is there is so much loose skin it can be difficult to judge quite how much to take away which is probably what happened in her first operation.

"We’ve managed to take this lid that’s folding over and take that excess skin away so she should be a lot more comfortable now."

Lila has "recovered well" after her surgery.

Jess, who rescued her, said:

"Lila is a friendly dog and will make somebody a lovely pet.

"She’s going to tick a lot of boxes for rehoming which is great.

"She’s a really loving dog.

"I’ve got a soft spot for Lila!"

Lila has now been rehomed to a new family.

Her story will be shown on The Dog Rescuers on Five tonight at 7pm.
