The Dartford Crossing is expected to be hit by major delays this evening, as the QEII bridge is to be remain closed.

It's after Just Stop Oil demonstrators climbed onto the bridge structure in the early hours of this morning.

Just Stop Oil said in a statement that two supporters of the group had scaled the structure "to demand that the Government halts all new oil and gas licences and consents".

Essex Police Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said: “We are continuing to work with our partners to resolve this situation as quickly and safely as possible.

“This is a complex situation due to the height the people on the bridge are at.

“National Highways, who ultimately have responsibility for the bridge and will make the decision about when to re-open it, have made an assessment that it is not currently safe to re-open the road.

"We anticipate the bridge will remain closed through this evening's rush hour.

“However, a contraflow is in place through the tunnel allowing traffic to move from one side of the river to the other.

“This means traffic is moving but we anticipate your journey will take longer than usual so please plan ahead.”

“I know this will be frustrating for anyone wanting to use the bridge and I want to be clear – our priorities are to keep people safe and keep Essex moving.

“We will take action against anyone who puts life in danger or thinks they can selfishly stop others getting to work or getting on with their lives.

“I’m really grateful to the public for their patience and understanding.”
