Two fire crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service are expected to have stayed overnight to ensure a fire in Sheering is completely extinguished.

Firefighter were called to Hatfield Heath Road last night at 7:49pm after reports of a haystack fire.

The farmer had created firebreaks to try and help surround it and to avoid further spreading to nearby crops, trees and bushes.

Station Manager Jon Ford said: "The haystack is very close to trees, hedges and standing crops so we will be here into the early hours to make sure it does not reignite and spread.

"The B183 will remain closed in both directions while we deal with the incident.

"I'd like to thank the farmer for creating firebreaks. He will continue to help us by using a digger to pull the haystack apart, so that we can fully extinguish the embers.

"Thank you to our Control team for co-ordinating our response and our crews who did a fantastic job of surrounding the fire so quickly."

Two crews from Harlow, crews from Stansted and Sawbridgeworth (Hertfordshire) attended the scene along with Corringham's Water Bowser, which carries a large volume of water.
