Firefighters have been tackling a 'crane fire' on the A12 in Essex this afternoon (26 July).

One lane is closed and there is queueing traffic London bound, between Junction 19 A130 Colchester Road (Boreham Interchange) and Junction 17 A130 (Howe Green).

There is congestion to Junction 21 (Witham South).

Essex Travel News has confirmed on Twitter that the road is blocked because of a "vehicle fire".

There are also delays Northbound "due to onlookers".

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:

“Firefighters were called to a vehicle fire on the A12 at Boreham on the southbound carriageway at 1.37pm.

“On arrival, crews reported that a mobile crane, approximately 35 tonnes, had an engine fire and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire by 2.23pm.

“Crews currently remain at the scene to make the area safe and clean spilled hydraulic fluid following the fire.”

Meanwhile Station Manger Dan Kirk added:

"Crews worked in hot conditions to get this fire extinguished quickly and when they arrived, were presented with a large amount of what we believe is hydraulic fluid which presents an environmental risk.

"As well as protecting lives and property, we also work to protect the environment.

"We’ve been working to prevent this fluid entering the drains and a nearby fishing lake as well as the River Chelmer.

"Using our Environmental Protection Unit from Maldon, firefighters have been using specialist pumps to lift the fluid from the roadway and into an area where it can later be cleared by partners while making small dams to prevent the liquid from entering nearby water sources.

"Thank you to all the drivers who have been held up for your patience while we deal with this incident with our partners."
