The champions of the first Colchester Street Tag school's leader board have been announced.

Street Tag is an app that turns physical activity into a game, by converting walking, running, and cycling into Street Tag points.

Students and families at Friars Grove Primary School joined together to clock up more than 22,651,625 points.

They also won an Olympic themed performance programme worth £350 from the Dance Network Association called 'Let’s Go Tokyo!’, which the whole school took part in.

The app has been brought to Colchester by a partnership between Colchester Borough Council and the Essex Local Delivery Pilot.

It transforms streets and parks into a giant virtual playground.

The leader board has now been reset, so there is a level playing field for people to get outside, active and be in with a chance of winning prizes.

Councillor Beverley Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said:

"The Street Tag app has been a real success in Colchester, since it launched in March.

"It has incentivised hundreds of families across the borough to get moving and discover the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of being more active.

"Congratulations to Friars Grove School, they have managed to generate a fantastic school spirit between teachers, pupils and their families by taking part in the app.

"I would encourage people across the borough to get a team together and sign up to the school or community leader board, to get chance to win some fantastic prizes."

Friars Grove PE coordinator Matthew Johnstone said:

"Street Tag was launched just as the lockdown restrictions started to ease and it was a great, fun, free activity for families to get involved with.

"I lost a stone in two months just by getting more active by using the app.

"Parents have told me their cholesterol has lowered and a number of other health benefits- just by getting involved with Street Tag.

"We are very pleased to have won."
