Colchester council "optimistic" Rollerworld can be saved from closure
The venue's owners and the landlords have struggled to come to an agreement over future rent payments
Local authorities in Colchester have told us they're "optimistic" that Rollerworld can be saved from closing.
The venue is set to shut at the end of next month, as it's owners and the landlords have struggled to come to an agreement over future rent payments
Dubbed ‘the finest roller rink in Europe’, Rollerworld has etched itself into the bedrock of Colchester tourist attractions.
Many came from across the UK and Europe over the last 32 years for the thrill of the rink, laser quest or even a blast at karaoke.
"We will do whatever we can to help Save Rollerworld in Colchester".
The closure comes in response to a rent dispute between the landlord, Pletchley Holdings, and Rollerworld.
The landlord has raised the price of rent nearly thrice the previous rate, something that the owners say they are unable to afford.
Negotiations about the finances have been underway for nearly two years, however inability to reach an agreement means closure could be as early as November.
Councillor Adam Fox said:
“We will do whatever we can to help Save Rollerworld in Colchester’.
For the building that was recently declared an Asset of Community Value by Colchester Borough Council, closure now appears inevitable however Mr Fox still holds hope that a deal can be made.
“We’re working cross-party to see what more can be done. For anyone who grew up in Colchester and for our current generation of children and young people, it’s a part of our town. We are hopeful of a positive outcome that saves Rollerworld for years to come”.
