People in Colchester encouraged to donate unwanted bikes to those in need
So far this year 90 bikes have been donated to a local project
A scheme allowing Colchester residents to donate unwanted bikes to those in need has collected around 90 bikes so far this year.
The Community Cycle initiative allows residents to drop off unwanted bikes to collection points throughout Colchester, which are then refurbished and gifted to local community groups or individuals most in need.
It was formed through a partnership between Colchester Borough Council, Colchester Anti-Loo Roll Brigade, en-form and Route 51 Cycle Project.
Peter Dutch, from the Anti-Loo Roll Brigade, says lots of people have benefited from the initiative: "We've supplied quite a few to the local Bangladeshi ladies' local community, and lots of local groups, such as Refugee Action.
"Some have gone to local families and Ukrainian refugee families...
"A lot of Ukrainian families who've come to Colchester have been put with hosts who don't necessarily live in town centres. Without the bikes it would be hard work for them to go to the shops, let alone anywhere else, because they probably can't afford public transport and they certainly can't afford cars.
"It's a free, green-friendly way for them to get about."
Peter hopes it may help people struggling with the cost of living crisis too:
"In some cases it means people can get to job interviews or important meetings without spending the £5 they had set aside to pay for the electricity meter on public transport to go to a job interview for a job they may not get."
Residents can also visit any drop-off point for a free bike check with Dr Bike and for free cycling safety equipment, whether or not they have an unwanted bike to donate.
So far this year, the scheme has collected 90 bicycles, and has already beaten last year’s total of 55 donations.
Cllr Julie Young, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing & Communities, said: “Cycling is one of the best ways for residents to stay healthy while having fun. It enables people to get more active and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
"Being active can help prevent illness and pain, whilst improving sleep, lessening anxiety, brain health, heart health and so much more!
“I would like to thank the local heroes who donated their unused bikes. As the cost of living becomes harder, some of our most vulnerable residents would not be able to afford a bicycle. Your kind donation will mean the world to them.”
