Popular Colchester race returns after 2 year Covid hiatus
Runners are raising money for charity
A popular charity race in Essex is back after a two year Covid-imposed hiatus.
Hundreds of people are expected to run the Colchester 10k today, all to raise money for local charities EACH, Colchester Emergency Night Shelter and Colchester Foodbank.
Race director Tony Dutch is thrilled the event is back: “This is a major event and we’re very much looking forward to staging it. We held a virtual version last year but it’ll be great to see everyone and be together again."
When last held in 2019, the race attracted more than 800 runners.
The race is organised by Rotary in Colchester – a partnership of the town’s three Rotary Service Clubs.
Richard Piele is from one of the clubs and is helping organise the event.
He says everyone who participates will get a special, environmentally-friendly reward: "We're very pleased this year, we've got a totally new medal design which will be made with recyclable materials.
"We've sourced them in the UK, with a company that's very environmentally-minded. Previously we've had to buy them in from China and it's very expensive to get them shipped."
He says they're expecting over 500 entrants this year, and is hoping for sunny weather: "We've always been lucky with the weather before, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!"
