Castle Point Borough Council has confirmed that overnight street lighting will be reinstated across the borough by the end of October 2025, following strong support from residents in a recent public consultation.

The survey drew responses from 3,887 residents, with 83% in favour of keeping lights on overnight.

The top concerns cited by respondents were crime prevention (81.5%), personal safety at night (78.7%), and improved visibility during emergencies or deliveries (59.7%).

Overnight street lighting in the county was originally reduced in 2014, when Essex County Council (ECC) introduced part-night lighting to cut costs and energy usage. Castle Point Borough Council will now fund the service and instruct ECC to leave the lights on throughout the night.

Cllr Stephen Mountford, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “The consultation results are clear. Our residents want overnight lighting restored, and we will act on that feedback.

"This decision reflects our commitment to delivering on our election promises and consulting with our residents, ensuring Castle Point remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone, both day and night.”

The council expects the change to be fully implemented by the end of October 2025.
