A seafront funfair in Essex is to massively expand, taking over the derelict site of its former neighbour.

Fantasy Island, in Eastern Esplanade, Canvey Island, will take over site of Leisure Island, which is next door to it.

Leisure Island closed in February after 20 years, with owner Scott Petty making the decision to shut last year after the death of his son Charley, 30, following a four-year battle with cancer.

Weeks later there was a large fire at the site.

Business owners Derek and Suzanne Gray are said to have “big plans” for the venture, with new attractions expected to be built.

The local council says it will be supportive of the expansion with hopes that the new site can be up and running by the summer.

Barry Palmer, Canvey Independent councillor for regeneration and economic growth, said: “They want a chance to get open for the summer. I know they have some ideas and have been talking about it. They are great people and did have some big plans but didn’t have the room at their existing site.

“Now with this new additional plot it will be a chance for them to do some wonderful things. It will be interesting to see what they do there. The council has offered them a two-year lease, with a reasonable rate to help get them started at first, and after that, the cost will be more after it’s up and running.”

Mr and Mrs Gray run a number of other local businesses, including the Monico Pub and Jimmy Macs restaurant.

Castle Point Council and the Grays were not immediately available for comment.
