Campaign to save the Naze from erosion

There's a bid to raise £20,000 to protect the coastline

The Naze on the coast of Essex could disappear if we don’t take immediate action to stop natural erosion.

That’s according to the Naze Protection Society campaign group.

They’ve set a target of raising £20,000 a year to place rock baskets to break up the waves before they hit the coastline.

David Eagle is the Acting Chairman:

"In the last five years, there seems to have been a change and things are accelerating really fast.

"That means in some places, the erosion has gone to three or five metres.

"We are within a breath of having a real problem."

The Society is setting a new fundraising target of £20,000 a year so that they can deliver soft-engineered structures working with partners, and gradually build resilience into the whole of the north beach area.

They say that in this way, with the public's help, they will protect the much-loved environment that is the unique part of Walton-on- the-Naze, for future generations to enjoy.

David told us what could happen if they don't take action:

"Once the erosion gets behind the Naze, it will completely change the tidal dynamics of the area, it puts the marine industries at threat, it will potentially get behind Walton itself.

"But the thing is, at the moment, it is affordable to get in there and really make a difference.

"There is a lot at stake."
