Brentwood Council fails to keep full control after Conservatives lose three seats

The council is no longer controlled by a single party

Brentwood Borough Council is no longer controlled by a single party, after the Tories lost their majority in the local elections. The Lib Dems now have 17 seats after winning three seats from the Tories.

It means there are 17 Lib Dems, 17 Conservatives, one independent and two Labour councillors. Discussions will now focus over the weekend for a coalition to form an adminsitration.

The council was electing a third of its councillors, with the Lib Dems making strong gains despite not winning enough to take control of the council themselves.

Turnout was low across the board, at around 31.5 per cent. Local issues such as potholes, were suggested by candidates as the main reasons behind some of the swings between parties. Here is a full rundown of the results:
