Councillor Graham Butland, leader of Braintree District Council, has opened up about his personal battle with advanced prostate cancer. In an interview with Greatest Hits Radio; he's recounted his unexpected diagnosis in early December, revealing that the cancer had spread to most of the bones in his body.

Despite the grim diagnosis, Cllr Butland maintains a positive outlook, expressing determination to confront the challenge head-on. "It's given me a new feminine side," Cllr Butland remarked, referring to the hormone treatment he has begun. He noted a significant decrease in his PSA levels, indicating progress in his treatment.

Reflecting on the societal stigma surrounding men's health issues, Cllr Butland emphasized the importance of breaking the silence. "We men, we don't like to talk about things. We don't want to cry. We think of that as weakness," he stated. Acknowledging the emotional toll of the diagnosis, he highlighted the support of his family and urged other men to open up about their health concerns.

Drawing parallels with recent public figures disclosing their health struggles, such as King Charles, Cllr Butland praised the value of transparency. "Certainly, I think King Charles has done all men in the United Kingdom a huge service by being open about what he's facing," Cllr Butland remarked. He hopes that such openness will encourage more men to confront their health challenges openly.

Despite the uncertainties ahead, Cllr Butland remains resolute in making the most of his time. "I was determined that I would live with this and not die of it," he affirmed. Planning trips and enjoying daily activities with his family, Cllr Butland refuses to let his diagnosis define his life.

"I feel as if I'm taking the insurance company on holiday with me, but I'm going to make the best of whatever time I've got"

"I recognize it's some stage I will tail off, but at the moment, whilst I'm in a position to do things, I'm damn well gonna do them."
