Basildon Council is set to begin a programme of safety and environmental improvement works at Markhams Chase pond, investing £100,000 in the project.

The planned works include:

Re-profiling steep vertical banks and expanding margins near footpaths to improve public safety

Upgrading pond inlet and outlet hydraulics and improving drainage from surrounding areas

Introducing vegetation improvements to help capture runoff and support biodiversity

Removing silt to improve the pond’s water quality

Enhancing the visual appeal of the pond and restoring surrounding grassland areas

Cllr Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment & Leisure, said:

“These works represent a significant investment in making Markhams Chase pond safer, cleaner and more enjoyable for everyone. By reshaping the banks, improving drainage and restoring surrounding grassland, we’re creating a space that is both safer for the public and richer in biodiversity.”

He added:

“We are taking meaningful steps to protect local wildlife while giving residents a greener, better-maintained space to enjoy. These improvements will help ensure Markhams Chase remains a valued natural area for years to come.”
