Specialist officers who supported a young girl after she reported she was sexually abused have seen her attacker convicted of sexually assaulting her.

In November 2020, the victim, aged under 10, reported she had been sexually assaulted by 38-year-old David Kidd, of Appleford Court, Basildon.

Police say they acted quickly to apprehend Kidd, who made significant comments to arresting officers, telling them: “This is what I was wearing when it happened.”

Following his arrest, they executed a warrant at his address, seizing mobile phones and a laptop.

Forensic examination of two phones showed internet searches relating to children, alongside indecent images of children.

In September 2021, Kidd was charged with two counts of sexually assaulting a girl under 13 and three counts of making indecent images of children.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges, but the trial faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and barrister strike action.

On Tuesday 18 July, the second day of the trial at Basildon Crown Court, Kidd changed his pleas and admitted all charges against him.

He is set to be sentenced on Friday 8 September at the same court.

Detective Sergeant Ellie Nudd, officer in the case, works with our specialist Child Abuse Investigation Team, made up of dedicated officers who specifically investigate child sexual offences and support the victims.

She said: “This has been an extremely difficult and emotional process for the victim and her family, given her young age at the time of the offending and the length of the court process.

“We were there to support them every step of the way.

“Due to Kidd originally pleading not guilty, he put his young victim through the ordeal of pre-recording her cross examination and left her family facing the prospect of a trial.

“His late change of heart, on the second day of the trial, is testament to the strength of the case and the victim.

“Kidd now faces justice for his despicable actions against a defenceless child.”
