Two people have been arrested after the robbery of cash in transit driver outside Asda in Colchester.

The incident, in Turner Rise retail park, was reported to officers at 1pm yesterday (30th March). The driver of the cash van was assaulted and a box with cash in was taken.

A grey BMW was then seen leaving the area at speed.

A number of teams from across the force were deployed to the incident, including skilled roads pursuit officers and armed officers.

Quick enquiries suggested the vehicle was in Lexden and a short time later it was seen in nearby Marks Tey.

After failed attempts to stop the vehicle, officers began following at close proximity. Within a minute, the BMW had been stopped and two men were arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Items of significance to the investigation were also located in the car.

Chief Inspector Ella Latham, officer in command for north Essex, said: “The speed at which teams from across the force were able to come together to coordinate the response to this incident should not be underestimated.

“The communication between everyone involved was exemplary and has ultimately led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of some significant evidence – all within a short time period.

“The safety of businesses across Essex is extremely important to us – and nobody should become a victim of crime whilst doing their job.

“Thankfully, the victim did not sustain any serious injuries, but he is understandably extremely shaken up and he is being supported by officers.”
