82-year-old man dies after setting himself on fire whilst refilling lighter
The fire caused significant burns to his body
An elderly man has died in Essex after setting fire to himself whilst refilling a lighter.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have issued safety advice after the 82-year-old man died last month after unknowingly spilling some of his lighter fluid on his clothing which then ignited.
The fire caused significant burns to the man's body, who was then found deceased by paramedics.
Group Manager Ben Turner said: “This was a very tragic accident, and we want to send our sincere condolences to the man’s family.
“Re-fillable lighters are becoming more popular due to the environmental impact of the disposable lighters. While we understand the appeal of this type of lighter, we want everyone who owns one to know the risks, and understand how to use them safety.
“If you use a refillable lighter, follow our safety advice:"
Safety advice from the Fire service includes never smoking whilst re-fuelling your refillable lighter, and always refilling one in an open or well-ventilated space with sufficient air circulation.
Taking extra care to not spill any liquid as well as washing clothes that have come into contact with butane thoroughly.
