4,500 Essex children taught about cycling safety this year
Essex County Council is encouraging more students to cycle to school
Essex students have been taught about cycling safely on the roads, with 4,500 receiving training sessions from Bikeability since April.
A further 4,500 training places have been booked up to March 2026.
Essex County Council's cycling training team includes 40 qualified instructors, delivering Bikeability sessions in more than 300 county schools.
Students learn how to navigate simple junctions, where to position themselves on the road, and how to pass side roads safely.
Councillor Cunningham said: “I’m delighted to support the Bikeability Trust’s Cycle to School Week as we know if we can get children cycling at a young age, they’ll have the confidence and knowledge to continue cycling into adulthood.
“We recently adopted our Cycling Strategy which sets out our vision, outcomes and actions for cycling in the county over the next few years. Our aim is to create a safer, greener and healthier Essex where cycling is part of everyday life.
“Not only can cycling be a cost-effective and convenient way of getting around, it can help us tackle many of the big issues we face such as improving physical and mental wellbeing and reducing congestion.”
