Remains of 37 dogs found at Billericay property
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals
Essex Police have uncovered the remains of 37 dogs and seized around 20 others from a property in the Crays Hill area of Billericay, following multiple reports of suspected animal cruelty.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday, 13 May, in coordination with the RSPCA and Basildon Borough Council. A police presence remained in the area overnight as part of the ongoing investigation.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals. They are currently in police custody.
Inspector Steve Parry of Basildon’s neighbourhood policing team said the discovery followed reports made through the Action Fraud system, leading to a joint visit to the property: “At this stage, we believe we have found the remains of 37 dogs and about 20 live dogs which are now being cared for.
“The priority for all our partners is to locate their last-known owners. This is likely to be a complex and potentially far-reaching investigation, and while we won’t be giving a running commentary, we will update the public when appropriate.”
Authorities have acknowledged growing concern on social media but are urging the public to avoid speculation while enquiries are ongoing.
Cllr Aidan McGurran, Basildon Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Leisure, also issued a statement: “I am aware of the distressing reports following a joint action between the Police, RSPCA, and Basildon Council officers. This is an ongoing police investigation and I would urge residents to refrain from speculating.
“We are currently working very closely with our partners, and as soon as we have more information, we will share further updates.”
The rescued dogs are now in the care of the RSPCA and other welfare organisations.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Essex Police or Action Fraud.
