A new 150-home estate could be built a short distance from an Essex city, as plans have been unveiled. Developer Bloor Homes is proposing the development, which also includes affordable housing, a new car park, public open space, landscaping, children’s play area, on land north of Coach Road, Great Horkesley – outside Colchester.

The plans state the site is currently farmland. The plans include 30 per cent affordable housing which works out as up to 45 homes.

The proposals include a community car park “to address local pressures” at Bishop William Ward School and Tiddlywinks Pre-School. The car park has been designed to have a capacity of 30 spaces sufficient to accommodate the parking needs of the school at peak drop off and pick up times, according to the plans.

Bloor Homes is also proposing to include a number of improvements to Coach Road including: introducing new signage, new road markings, localised road widening, kerb improvements, enforcement measures and uncontrolled pedestrian crossings at various locations.

The planning documents state: “The proposed development would deliver significant social and economic benefits through the delivery of new open market homes. There is a clear national policy imperative for the increase in new homes. The site would make an important contribution towards the ongoing delivery of housing in the area and will enable people to have access to a wider choice of homes.

“The proposed development could support around 133 temporary jobs on-site and in the wider economy per annum over the expected four-year build programme. The new homes will be supported by over 2.5 hectares of new public open space which will include significant landscaping, tree planting, walking routes and potential play space.”
