A 13-year-old girl is due to appear at Basildon Magistrates Court today (October 23), after being arrested over the weekend on suspicion of two counts of assault against an emergency service worker, and later charged.

Two Essex Police Officers were assaulted by being punched and spat at whilst responding to a high number of calls relating to violence, anti-social behaviour and criminal damage from a group of people in Basildon Town Centre on Saturday (October 21).

The incidents resulted in Police enacting a dispersal order overnight on Saturday, giving officers the power to ask people to leave the area.

No further reports relating to the incidents were then reported.

A 14-year-old girl was also arrested, on suspicion of assault, and has been released without further investigation.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Kane said “Those in Basildon Town Centre would have noticed an increased police presence in the area last night following the issue of a Dispersal Order.

“We received a number of reports yesterday afternoon of around 30 young people in the town centre, committing offences including criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.

““Our officers responded quickly to keep the public safe and it is unacceptable that two officers should be assaulted whilst doing their duty.

“We have considered the Dispersal Order to have been successful in reducing the disorder but we are continuing to work with our partners, including business owners to ensure this disorder does not occur.”
