Robin Campbell, Matt Doyle and Matt Campbell from UB40 joined Jackie Brambles on Greatest Hits Radio to talk about their brand new album 'UB45', and celebrating 45 years of the band. They also chatted about the band's beginnings and how founding member Robin Campbell knew many of the band members from a very early age.

"It was our social circle," Robin explained. "We were a gang of mates, I've known everybody in the band, all the founder members, I've known since they were sort of 10 years old or younger in some cases. So we grew up together."

UB40 was created back in 1978 with founding members, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer, Norman Lamont Hassan, from the current band, along with Robin, and former members, Yomi Babayemi, Jimmy Lynn, Brian Travers and Robin's brother Ali Campbell.

"We were a gang that talked about forming a band," Robin continued. "And when we did form the band it was the guys that actually wanted to do it, you know, were prepared to do it, to give up their jobs if they had them and give it, you know, every day, five days a week, learning instruments, learning to play together."

He went on to say: "They're the ones that became the members of the band and the friends that weren't prepared to become musicians became our crew, our technicians, you know, so we literally took our our gang, our social circle on the road with us."

The singer went on to explain how he's been surrounded by music his entire life, as his dad was a folk musician. Robin said: "Well, my father was a professional musician and he played folk music, traditional and contemporary quite successfully.

"So, I spent the whole of my life surrounded by music and musicians I can remember as a child sitting on the carpeted floor, listening to people rehearsing and playing in our front room.

"So yeah, I've always been surrounded, but I think that's why I got into harmonies so soon as a young kid, I was really into the harmonies listening to my father's sister, harmonising with my father was always fascinating to me and then I fell in love with the Everly Brothers."

He continued: "Literally I've been surrounded by music all my life, which was why, when we talked about forming a band, it was never a strange thing to us, you know, our mates all thought it was, you know, uh, an odd thing to do, but for us, you know, making a living as a musician was perfectly normal and we were encouraged in that way."
