The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the inductees for 2022, which will see iconic artists Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie, and Eurythmics among those welcomed in under the Performer Category this year.
The 17 nominees were announced in March, and now that the fan votes and committee votes have been counted, the results are in. The committee is made up of more than 1,000 artists, historians, and music industry professionals and according to the Rock Hall chairman John Sykes, they voted for artists they thought: "Had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture and helped change the course of rock ’n’ roll."
This is the first time that Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, and Duran Duran have been nominated, while Eurythmics had been previously nominated but not inducted.
Duran Duran took to Twitter to thank fans for voting and say that they are: 'So honoured, and thrilled, and happy' about the induction.
Lionel Richie also posted on Twitter to say: 'Being elected to @rockhall is an incredible honor. I would like to say THANK YOU to all of the voters, to all of my wonderful fans and to everyone at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Congratulations to all of my fellow 2022 inductees! #RockHall2022'.
When she received the nomination, Dolly Parton released a statement, choosing to bow out as she didn't feel she had 'earned the right' to be included. She did, however, express her desire to release a rock album because of the nomination.
The Rock Hall responded to say that she was still on the ballot, and commended her gracious response. Following a change of heart from Dolly earlier this week, she went on to say that she would 'gracefully' accept the honour if she was inducted.
Among those inducted this year are Carly Simon, Judas Priest and Pat Benatar, while several other artists were nominated but will not be inducted this year, including Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush, Devo, Fela Kuti, New York Dolls, MC5, and Dionne Warwick.
The 37th annual induction ceremony will take place on 5th November at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
