Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) have released their latest album 'Bauhaus Staircase', their first since 2017. The album features 12 songs, including the title track which was released earlier this year.

On the day of the album's release, OMD took to Instagram to share a photo of themselves holding a vinyl copy of the album, writing: 'Our new album Bauhaus Staircase is out now. We hope you enjoy it!'

Speaking about the album's title track, Andy McCluskey said: "I am a huge lover of visual arts, especially mid 20th century movements. The song is a metaphor for strength and artist passion in the face of criticism and adversity.

"When times are hard, there is a tendency for Governments to look at cutting funding for creativity, just at the moment when the arts are most needed to nourish our souls. It seems appropriate that the song and its eponymous album were created during Covid Lockdown."

OMD are best-known for 'Souvenir' and 'Joan of Arc', and have now released 14 albums dating back to their self-titled 'Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark' in 1980.

How did OMD announce their new album?

The band wrote on X, formerly Twitter, back in August: 'Our new studio album Bauhaus Staircase will be released on 27th October. Limited and signed formats are now available for pre-order at http://BauhausStaircase.com'.

Speaking about the new release, Andy McCluskey admitted: "I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom (during lockdown)."

He went on to say: "I’m very happy with what we’ve done on this record. I’m comfortable if this is OMD’s last statement."

OMD premiered the music video for their new song 'Bauhaus Staircase' on 22nd August.

Fans left several comments on YouTube, with one writing: 'This band is constantly looking toward the future, whilst respecting their past. I've been so impressed with their high level of intelligent output over the years. Exciting to see what rabbit they pull out of their hat this time,' another commented: 'Can’t wait! The last album was so good! Best thing I’ve heard in a very long time.❤️🙏🙏✊🙌🙌🙌🙌'.

Originally forming back in 1978, the band have continued to release new music through the years, apart from a decade-long gap between 1996 and 2006. The last album they released was back in 2017, when 'The Punishment of Luxury' reached Number 4 in the UK.
