Freddie Mercury's 'tightest' leather hotpants he wore at 1980 Queen concert up for auction
They’re expected to fetch up to £12,000
A pair of tailored leather shorts worn by Queen legend Freddie Mercury are set to go under the hammer later this month.
Freddie wore the leather hotpants together with a Flash T-shirt during the encore at Queen’s concert at the Birmingham Exhibition Centre on 6th December 1980 as part of The Game Tour.
The shorts have an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000 and they are up for sale at Omega Auctions in Newton-le-Willows on Tuesday 25th April as part of their Audio Equipment and Music Memorabilia auction.
Describing the moment Freddie wore the shorts onstage, Queen fan club secretary Jacky Gunn and Jim Jenkins wrote in their 1992 book Queen - As It Began: 'Freddie decided to try to shock the audience with his stage outfit for the encore: the shortest, tightest pair of black leather shorts he could find - they didn't leave much to the imagination, but no one complained...'
The shorts were previously purchased by a fan at the Queen Fan Club Auction in Southport in 1993. The lot includes the original signed letter of authenticity from fan club secretary Jacky Gunn. You can find out more about the sale here.
Last week, Freddie’s Queen band mate Brian May reacted to being named the greatest guitarist of all time in a poll by Total Guitar magazine.
The ever humble Sir Brian said: "I take everything like that with a pinch of salt, really, because cause you can't say who's best.
"The nice thing about guitar playing is that everybody's different. You can't really rank people. Of course, I've got my favourites too. But the fact that people put me in that position makes me smile. It's a lovely feeling.
"I'm not in the first million guitarists in the world; I know that. There's people I listen to every day that do things that I could never do."
