What is Curtis Stigers' song 'Good To Know You' about?

The song, called 'Good To Know You' was released earlier this year, and was written about Curtis' experience of meeting his biological father at the age of 46. As the singer explained, until the age of 17 he thought that his step-dad was his father, but his mum later opened up to him.

"It's the story of me, meeting my father for the first time, at the age of 46. I was 46 when I met my father," he explained.

"For much of my life... for the first 17 years of my life, I didn't know he existed. I thought my step-dad was my father, it was one of those things, and I think that happens a lot more. You hear a lot of stories about that.

"So my mother told me when I was 17 that in fact her college boyfriend was my father, but they had broken up before she knew she was pregnant, and he went off to Vietnam and died in the war. That's what I thought from 17 until my early 40s, late 30s."

Curtis went on to explain that he begun to feel there was "sometime fishy", but for most of his life he thought his father had died.

Then, at the age of 46 he tracked down his father, and their biological relationship was confirmed. "He turned out to be a great guy," Curtis admitted, continuing: "He didn't need to borrow money, and neither did I, so we both got a good deal out of it."

He added: "Then I had to figure out, what do I do, how do you create a relationship with your father, when he's not really your dad, he's your father. And so it was a very interesting, sometimes not uncomfortable, but it felt strange at first. What do you say to the guy who is your dad?

"We brought each other up to speed, we hung out and chatted and talked about our lives and he gained not only a son, but a granddaughter as well. I have a now a 25-year-old daughter, but at the time she was in her early teens, and it turned out to be a wonderful, wonderful thing. And so, that's what the song is about 'Good To Know You'."

What was the inspiration behind 'Songs From My Kitchen Volume 1'?

Curtis has now released his latest album 'Songs From My Kitchen Volume 1', and he told Jackie all about it. The album is dedicated to his late mum, and another close friend who has passed away. The album is named after his live stream show, that he did during Covid times, and features songs he performed in his kitchen.

"I would bring up my nice mics and a couple of lights and a camera, and the dogs, and I would put on a show. I would play guitar and sing songs, songs that people knew, I would sing 'I Wonder Why' and 'You're All That Matters To Me', I pulled out songs I hadn't played in years and I learned a lot of songs by other people, I'd always just loved," he explained.

After more than 50 live streamed shows, Curtis has now decided to release an album featuring many of his songs.
