Comedy legend and rock music aficionado Bill Bailey has put himself forward to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Italy.

56-year-old Bill took to Twitter on Sunday morning (23rd May) to confirm he’d be up for performing for the UK, writing: “I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring for #Eurovision 2022.”

Bill Bailey’s offer came the morning after the United Kingdom scored nul points across the board at Eurovision in Rotterdam for James Newman’s performance of ‘Embers.’

Following Jemini’s dismal ‘Cry Baby’ in 2003, it was the second time the UK has scored nul points at Eurovision in its 65-year history, and the fifth time the UK has finished bottom of the leader board.

Italian rock outfit Måneskin won Eurovision 2021 with their track ‘Zitti e buoni’ and singer Damiano David remarked during his victory speech: “We just want to say to the whole Europe, to the whole world, rock 'n' roll never dies!"

Bill Bailey plays numerous musical instruments including keyboard, guitar, theremin, horns, kazoo and bongos, and he incorporates music from a variety of genres into his comedy act, including, most notably, progressive rock from the 1970s.

A huge metal fan, Bill Bailey famously covered Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ on horns at Sonisphere in July 2011.

Last December, Bill Bailey won Strictly Come Dancing and danced to ‘Enter Sandman’ along the way.

The Guardian reported in 2007 that Bill Bailey wanted to win Eurovision and he was penning a number of songs his fans could vote on for his performance. Ultimately, Andy Abraham represented the UK in 2008 and he finished bottom of the leader board.
