Fans are loving the revamped Poppins

Fans of the original Mary Poppins, played by the wonderful Dame Julie Andrews, were more than a little bit sceptical about there being a remake of the beloved 1964 film. But almost three weeks after the release of Mary Poppins Returns, the film has grossed over $260 million worldwide.

Although there'll always be uncertainty about a remake of a classic film, it seems as though Disney have knocked it out of the park with Mary Poppins Returns - and already reportedly have a sequel "in the works".

According to the MailOnline, director Rob Marshall has confirmed that the team are already working on a potential sequel, and has said that although it's "early stages", he was happy to say that there were eight books which means there's "a lot of great material still to mine," adding that those books were what the team "worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know..."

He added that Mary Poppins could become an enduring character on the big screen, even following in the footsteps of franchises like Star Wars and James Bond, "Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?"

Producer John DeLuca added that he thought Emily Blunt would be happy to return to the role, telling the publication, "Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen."

Last year was pretty big for Emily - not only did she step into Mary Poppins' practically perfect shoes, she also starred in A Quiet Place alongside her husband John Krasinski, who also directed it.
