A 17-year-old boy has been charged with a drugs offence after the death of a girl of the same age in Inverkeithing.

Police have said they were called to a report of a teenage girl, 17, taking unwell at a property in the Fife town around 2.45am on Monday.

She was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy but died a short time later.

A Police Scotland spokesperson has said: "Her death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are continuing.

"A 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with a drugs offence and released pending further enquiries.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

It comes as Inverkeithing High School pupils and teachers were informed of the 'sudden' death of a student on Monday afternoon.

Details of who they are hasn't been released.

Fife Council’s education manager Karen Lees said: “We are aware of the tragic and untimely death of a young person from Inverkeithing High School.

“We are supporting the school community and in particular any pupils who knew this young person, providing space, time and help to those who might be impacted by this terrible event.”
