Police have confirmed a 66-year old man has died after he was injured at a recycling centre just outside Dunfermline.

Emergency services were called to the site north of the Wellwood area at 4.30pm on Wednesday - but he passed away at the scene.

An investigation into exactly what happened is underway.

A spokesperson from the force said: “Police received a report of a man having been injured at a premises north of Wellwood, Dunfermline, around 4.30pm on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

“Emergency services attended, however the 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are continuing and the Health and Safety Executive has been notified.”

An HSE spokesperson said: "We are aware and investigating alongside Police Scotland."

Commercial waste management enterprise Cicero operates the recycling centre on behalf of Fife Council, which owns the site, and it said it is "providing all possible support to colleagues", and will work with Police Scotland and the HSE as required.

Robin Baird, chief executive of Cireco said: "The Dunfermline recycling and waste disposal centre at Lochhead is currently closed following a fatal incident on site on Wednesday afternoon.

"This is a tragic situation. The thoughts of everyone at Cireco are with the family, friends and loved ones of our colleague at this very difficult time.

"We are supporting the police and the Health and Safety Executive with their investigations and will not be able to comment further on the incident until those investigations have concluded.

"The wellbeing of our staff at Cireco is paramount to us. We are speaking to all our colleagues and support is being made available for anyone who needs it.

"I hope everyone will understand that some disruption to service is inevitable at this time. We will update the public about the availability of recycling facilities as soon as possible."
