They're also hoping to break a world record by becoming the oldest women to ever cross the Atlantic.

Four working mums from York have set off on the challenge of a lifetime today.

Frances Davies, Helen Butters, Niki Doeg and Janette Benaddi - who are in their 40s and 50s - are hoping to become the oldest women to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean when they take part in 2015 Talisker Atlantic challenge which is known as the toughest rowing race on earth.

They'll race three thousand miles from the Canary Islands to Antigua - battling up to 40ft waves, storms and heatwaves as they look to earn their place in the history books by becoming the oldest female crew to row across any ocean.

It's expected to take the team - who only took up rowing as a hobby four years ago - around eight weeks to complete, meaning they'll be away from their families all Christmas and New Year.

By taking part in the event, they're hoping to raise in excess of ÂŁ100,000 for three local charities, Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, Action for Children and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
