Work to build a new £5m retail development in east Hull started today.

The long-awaited project will transform the run-down site on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Holderness Road.

Five new retail units and a car park will be created, while two empty shops fronting Holderness Road are also being refurbished and brought back into use as part of the scheme.

A special ceremony to mark the start of the development took place today.

Hull City Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Brady said:

  • “I welcome this further investment in East Hull by Dransfield Group who have a strong track record of successful regeneration in the area. I want to particularly thank Mark Dransfield who, with his team, have worked tirelessly with our regeneration team over a number of years to bring this development to fruition.*

“With the significant investment in Green Port by Siemens and ABP, the planned investment by RB for the multi-million pound Centre for Scientific Excellence, the KREATE learning and enterprise centre and continued housing regeneration including the development of 4,000 new homes equalling a private investment in excess of £5m, wholly demonstrate that our city is certainly heading in the right direction.

“The combined investments in the community help to demonstrate further real confidence in the area’s future and will no doubt create a number of job opportunities for our local community.”

Hull East MP Karl Turner told Viking FM:

"We have finally got there and this is going to be a great development for east Hull, it's going to tidy up the road coming into the main part of east Hull. It's going to be retail shopping which means local jobs by local businesses and it's fantastic for the area."
