Women's group supports City of Hull Street Angels
The Street Angels help to keep people safe at night in Hull.
Women in Business Hull are highlighting the work of the City of Hull Street Angels charity in keeping people safe at night during their charity lunch today (10 November.)
The Street Angels, Women in Business Hull's charity of 2023 have volunteers who patrol the streets of the city every Friday and Saturday night looking after vulnerable people.
Karen Newton, chair of Women in Business Hull said: "They've sat and held people's hands while they're dying and I just don't think they get the recognition they deserve.
"They give flip flops out to people who can't walk in their high heels, they make sure that taxis come and pick vulnerable people up and they provide absolute support across the city."
Lisa Squire is the guest speaker at the Women in Business Hull lunch as she speaks in support of the charity following her daughter Libby's death on 1 February 2019.
Libby was on a night out while studying at the University of Hull and was sent home in a taxi on her own before she was killed.
Lisa said: "Libby paid the ultimate sacrifice but we can learn from it and make changes and make things better because of her.
"One of the last things Libby said to me the weekend before she died was 'mum I've forgotten how much I love learning' and it came back to me and thought it's all got to be about learning - we've got to learn from Libby."
Since Libby's death, Lisa and Humberside have run the Libby Campaign, which encourages women and girls to report any non-contact sexual offences as well as reminding men and boys that such behaviours will not be tolerated.
