A 27-year-old woman has admitted to causing a crash that killed two people and seriously injured a young boy on rural roads near Bridlington.
Laila Barnard-Wigley, of Thorseby Avenue, pleaded guilty to two counts of death by careless driving during her appearance at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.
The collision occurred on Friday, 7 May 2021, when a black Mercedes GLA, driven by Barnard-Wigley, collided with a red Peugeot 2008 at the junction of Grindale Road on the A165 at around 3.30pm.
The Peugeot driver, a 29-year-old man, and his front-seat passenger, a 28-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A two-year-old boy travelling in the Peugeot suffered serious injuries but survived after being rushed to hospital. Barnard-Wigley also sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment.
An investigation by the Serious Collisions Unit revealed that Barnard-Wigley had been driving carelessly on rain-affected rural roads.
Leading the investigation at the time Police Sergeant Rob Mazingham from our Serious Collisions Unit, who said:
“This was a truly tragic incident that left a little boy orphaned and devastated families who continue to grieve and attempt to navigate a life without their loved ones.
“This has been an extremely complex, and lengthy investigation, and I would like to thank the families of the deceased for their patience, and strength throughout the entire process.
“Every fatal collision we attend is a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Behind every incident is a person, whether that be someone’s parent, partner, child, sibling, or best friend, and in almost every case it could have been prevented."
