Young people in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire are being warned about the dangers of a new internet craze which has seen youngsters setting themselves on fire for a dare.

The so-called 'Fire Challenge', which stemmed from America, involves young people setting themselves alight, recording how long it takes to put the flames out before then posting the video to YouTube.

The craze has already surfaced in North Lincolnshire with an 11-year-old boy from Barnetby recently suffering severe burns after taking part in the challenge and there are now fears more children in oure region could be getting involved in the craze.

Keiron Garner is from Humberside Fire and Rescue and told us:

"A young 11-year-old buy from Barnetby was actually dared to do this and he has ended up in hospital with serious burns. He's not a very well boy at the moment as he is still in hospital in need of skin grafts and his actions of what he has done will affect him for the rest of his life.

"This boy and his friends didn't wake up one day and think that they were going to set themselves on fire, they've obviously seen something on the internet and looked at videos from America going back to 2012 of this Fire Challenge and that is where they have got the idea from.

"We are having a lot of incidents where youths are playing with accelerants such as deodrants, nail varnishes and lighting them and lighting their clothes.

"At the moment we are doing everything we can to get the message and the warning out there. We are delivering edcation in schools so hopefully we are trying to nip this in the bud so that we don't have a bigger issue.

"People are just so obsessed with celebrities, social media and getting comments and likes on Facebook to get some kind of virtual celebrity tie to their names where they are willing to do anything and put themselves in great danger and set themselves on fire, for 10 seconds of madness that could affect the rest of their lives it is just not worth it. If you get dared, if you get challenged just walk away.

"Parents should also check what their children are looking at on the internet and if they do find thinga of this nature then tell them about the dangers and the consequences. If you are concerned about your child playing with matches, lighters or fire then get in touch with your local fire service as we have got trained professionals who can come and educate yor children."
