University of Hull expert on the impact of war says Ukrainian conflict will continue to impact us
It'll affect the likes of food prices and precious metals
An expert on the impact of war from the University of Hull says what's happening in Ukraine will have a major knock on effect for us here in the UK.
Russia continues to shell major cities today, although it's thought some progress has been made during peace talks.
Dr James Pritchett is a Lecturer in War Studies at The University of Hull, he told us:
"We have a lot more private enterprises than Russia does even today".
"Most food will go up in price because of the increase in fuel, because of course food needs fuel to move around".
"We can also expect to see an increase in the price of certain commodities like precious metals".
"There'll be a certain de-modernisation of the Russian economy, at least to an extent".
"The Russian exports will be impacted by both sanctions from the West but also by Moscow."
"Access to certain services like Swift or other internet bases services will impact the Russian economy quite severely".
He also says there'll be a huge impact on younger people in both Ukraine and Russia:
"The average young Russian will be impacted by the lack of access to certain imports, by the economic impact of sanctions on Russian exports."
"The quality of life will go down and that's going to be a particular social problems for young Russians who didn't grow up in the 1990s when Russia was still recovering from the collapse of the Soviet Union".
