A Hull veterans Charity is hoping to tackle the issue of homelessness by purchasing a property which has been made possible by funding.

Hull 4 Heroes supports veterans and their families across East Yorkshire - and are now looking to buy a house to use as emergency accommodation for veterans without a home.

Paul Matson is the CEO and tells us it's a challenge to find housing:

"One of our biggest struggles is, when a homeless veteran walks through the door, we pride ourselves that that person is no longer person as they'll be put up that night somewhere, paid for by the charity. But if we've got somewhere that they can go straight into, it'd be absolutely amazing.

"When somebody does walk through the door, it is always that 'Well, where are we going to put them?' and we spend the afternoon then searching for places to put them and we try and get them to be as close as humanly possible... so having a place that is totally set up, and totally self-sufficient will be perfect."

He added that the issue has got worse:

"Well each year it's got worse and worse, so now there's a bit of a crisis and we struggle on that front because there's no houses out there to put anybody in, so we end up having to put people up in hotels until we find somewhere permanent for them and things like that, so there's quite a big struggle in mental health - it's a major problem.

"It literally is difficult because there's no housing stock out there. For us to find somewhere to put them up and sometimes we have to put them up in a caravan in Bridlington or somewhere like that, but we need them close at hand, somewhere for them to stay overnight, and then we can start looking at permanent accommodation for them."
