Tent City sets up in Scunthorpe

Campaigners want more help for the homeless.

A new tent city has been set up in Scunthorpe town centre.

Campaigners have pitched tents close to the bus station on Carlton Street to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in the town.

They want the council to do more to help homeless people and offer more permanent accomodation instead of hosels.

Terry Marshall is behind it all and says they'll remain there throughout the winter.

Councillor Rob Waltham from North Lincolnshire Council said:

“We have tried to engage with the people who are homeless; however they do not want to accept the help we are offering. Our officers have been out to the site a number of times to remind them of the assistance that is available to them, and they will continue to do this.

“The council does the best it can to help people in anyway it can and works with local agencies to ensure the best support is provided.

“No one needs to be sleeping on the streets. There are a range of options available to assist anyone who has found themselves homeless.

“I would urge anyone who finds themselves in this situation to contact the council’s Housing Advice Team straightaway and we will work with you to identify the support you need and help you access the services you require.”
