Risk of flooding across East Yorkshire easing for now
It's after a weekend which saw a number of problems
People have been told to brace for another storm and possible flooding after the reopening of East Riding roads following floods yesterday (Sunday, October 29).
Dunswell Road, Meaux Lane, Pocklington’s Burnby Lane, Winstead Road, Walkington’s East End, Sands Lane in Barmston, Riplingham Road in Skidby, and the Withersea to Turnstall Road were reopen today.
An East Riding Council spokesperson said people should prepare for the arrival of Storm Ciarán along with further heavy rain from Thursday.
An Environment Agency spokesperson said it continues to work with others to help reduce the risk of flooding.
A flood alert remains in place for the River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill and Stamford Bridge as of this evening.
An Area Incident Room remains open and work continuing to address flooding on roads in Hull, the East Riding and across the Humber due to high tides.
Pumping was still going on at several locations and the Hull Tidal Surge Barrier is in operation.
It comes after roads were closed in 20 locations across the East Riding following a deluge after heavy rain yesterday morning.
Council teams and Humberside Fire and Rescue responded to the emergency and all flooding has now been dealt with.
It left Dunswell Lane between Dunswell and Cottingham submerged at the underpass beneath A1079 between Hull and Beverley.
Withernsea Sands Holiday Park was also flooded, along with the nearby B1242 between Waxholme and Roos.
Homes in Shiptonthorpe have also been flooded.
It comes ahead of Storm Ciarán making landfall in the South West of England and Wales on Wednesday evening, according to the Met Office.
Winds and gusts of between 50mph and up to 90mph in the most exposed areas are set to strike southern England, along with heavy rain into Thursday.
East Riding Council’s spokesperson said the arrival of Storm Ciarán could worsen the situation locally.
The spokesperson said: “Our teams, together with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, have been dealing with the flooding emergency in East Riding areas since yesterday.
“Heavy rainfall in the early hours of Sunday morning caused unexpected surface water flooding, which meant road closures had to be put in place in more than 20 locations, including Dunswell Road, to protect the safety of motorists and other people.
“Currently all flooding issues are being dealt with by our teams and roads are being reopened across the East Riding.
“Although the current flooding is dying down, people are being urged to remain vigilant as a further storm, Storm Ciarán, along with heavy rainfall is expected from Thursday could cause more flooding in the area.”
The Environment Agency’s spokesperson said: “We are aware of some flooding of properties in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
“We know how devastating flooding can be and we will continue to work with partner organisations to help reduce the risk of flooding.
“It is important that the public report any flooding to our hotline on 0800 80 70 60 and sign up to flood warnings at Gov.uk.”
