Rathlin Energy to expand exploratory drilling in East Yorkshire
Campaigners say they're "concerned" after an energy firm was given further permission to search for shale gas in West Newton.
Campaigners say they'll continue to fight against an energy firm's plans to expand their exploratory drilling in East Yorkshire.
Rathlin Energy have just been granted another permit to search for oil and gas at a new site in West Newton.
The new site - named West Newton B - comes after the company previously carried out test drilling at another site nearby which was called West Newton A.
But residents are concerned it could lead to fracking in the area.
Louise Castro lives in neighbouring Skirlaugh and told us:
"The impact to the environment, the devastation to the wildlife and the disruption to community life. It does de-value house prices and people don't have insurance and people were badly affected at West Newton A from the noise and light pollution. Also, the radioactive materials that will be coming through our villages and what happens if that spills?
"The villages are getting angrier and more upset as we reach that day when those trucks to build the access roads will start to roll in. That in itself will cause huge disruption and will see over 2,470 vehicle-movements through villages like Bilton and Sproatley in roads that are already not suitabloe for those types of vehicles.
"We have known it is coming and we will just carry on fighting andf campaigning against them and monitoring the situation just like we did at West Newton A. Drilling for fossil fuels is backward-looking and there are a whole range of alternatives out there."
You can see exactly where the new site will be by looking on the map below.
The Environment Agency - who granted the permit - says the company have not applied to carry out fracking.
