A protest's taking place in Hull this lunchtime after P & O Ferries yesterday sacked staff

800 are going across the country.

Many of those who worked the Hull - Rotterdam route have been made redundant.

The government's now reviewing contracts with the company.

P & O claims it had no other option.

Passengers are being told to expect some disruption today.

The demonstration will be at King George Dock.

We spoke to Gary Jackson from the RMT Union which represents workers in Hull.

"We're hopefully going to able to save British seafaring jobs, that's the ultimate key to the endgame of all of this".

"We'll have a process here in Hull and one in Dover just against what P & O are doing across the whole country."

"It's devastating for the local area if we lose another service to the continent - only 18 months ago we lost the Hull to Zeebrugge route".

Meanwhile a Goole charity sending humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine has had to find an alternate after the cancellation of the P & O ferries route from Hull.

Mark Penn is the founder of Help the homeless he says they should get a refund for their tickets but he's not sure when that'll be.

He says they HAVE managed to source an alternate route via Dover though.

"It's going to cost us more in fuel and more in time travelling, we've had to add 5 hours to our journey just to get down to the next ferry (in Dover)."

"We have to travel so we need extra money for that - I won't say we're short but it's tight".

The demonstration today's expected to be well attended and of course we'll bring the latest on that.
