Police are warning young women in Scunthorpe to "be on their guard" after a man in a car attempted to grab a 13-year-old girl in the town.

The incident happened between 5.30pm and 5.45pm on Friday, January 15, as the teenager walked along Holmfirth Road, close to Dewsbury Avenue.

As she walked past what she had assumed to be an empty black saloon car, the driver’s door opened and a man attempted to grab her.

She managed to get away and was unharmed as a result of the incident.

The man was described as white and quite muscular, wearing a dark hooded top and black leather gloves.

The registration number of the vehicle is thought to have contained an 8 and an A.

Chief Inspector Scott Snowden said:

“Luckily, while concerning, incidents like this are extremely rare.

“However, I would urge anyone with information about the car or the driver – no matter how insignificant - to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“There are also steps you can take to reduce the risk of being targeted.

“For example, always travel in groups of at least two and ensure your parents know where you are and what time you are going to be home.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101, quoting crime reference number 2163378 of January 15.
