Police name boy who drowned at Scunthorpe nature reserve

A 14 year-old boy who drowned at a nature reserve in Scunthorpe has been named as Kai Gardner-Pugh.

Officers were called out to Ashby Ville on Tuesday evening - where his body was found underwater.

Police are looking for a potentially important witness - a man who was seen nearby at the time.

In a statement, Humberside Police said: "Kai’s family continue to be supported by specially trained officers and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this very sad time. Kai's family have asked for privacy as they grieve and come to terms with their loss.

"We continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident and if you have any information that would help with our enquiries, no matter how small, please contact us on 101 quoting log 370 of 27 July 2021."

In a statement, Kai's school St Bede's Catholic Academy, said: "The school community is shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of one of our pupils, Kai Gardner-Pugh - he was 14 years old.

"Kai was a hard-working, humble, unassuming, and very intelligent young man with a close friendship group - a model pupil. He will be greatly missed and always remembered with affection.

"The school is in contact with Kai's parents, we are also providing support for students and staff who are affected by this dreadful news.

"The thoughts and prayers of the whole St Bede community, are with Kai’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
