Owners of Scunthorpe's steel works have asked for urgent financial help

It's reported that the Chinese owners have asked the government for help to keep two blast furnaces operational

Its being reported that urgent financial help and thousands of jobs at Scunthorpe's steel works could be under threat.

The news comes after its said that two of the steel works 'blast furnaces are not commercially viable.'

A source has told Sky News that they have asked government ministers for "hundreds of millions of pounds" to keep the blast furnaces operational.

The owners of British steel, the Jingye group have reportedly told ministers that the company's two blast furnaces are unlikely to be operational without the urgent aid.

The plant employs about 4,000 people and many others who are part of the steel works supply chain and dependent upon the company.

One insider told Sky News that the groups are "prepared to make thousands of people redundant if ministers rejected its request."

The Jingye Group bought steel works out in 2020.
