People in North Ferriby are worried the village wont be big enough to accommodate refugees.

It comes as East Riding of Yorkshire council is taking legal action to stop the government from using the Humber View Hotel to house asylum seekers.

One resident said:

“I feel desperately sorry for them it’s just the location. All I can see is people hanging around on street corners so I’m not in favour of it. I jus think there’s no where for them to go around here, they may walk to Hessle.”

Another said:

“ It doesn’t bother me too much at the end of the day it is what it is and there’s nothing we can really do about it.

We spoke with another local person who told us:

“We have one shop, one pub no doctors or dentists and our school is at full capacity. I don’t think it’s a good idea for the area itself however for the correct area with the amenities to suit these people that are struggling then yes, it is a good idea.”

Councils are fighting to stop the government from using hotels to house asylum seekers, with at least four authorities taking legal action, one of which is East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The Home Office said that "record levels" of arrivals to the UK had put "unprecedented pressure" on the system and it was working with councils to "find appropriate accommodation during this challenging time".

Humber View Hotel refused to comment.
