Construction of Scunthorpe’s new police station will not begin until early Summer 2026, with completion in late 2027. The new three-storey tall police station is to be built on the former market site, off the High Street.

It  will be home to 250 Humberside Police staff, though will only have a maximum of 80 staff on site at any one time. Its build will involve a western extension of Queen Elizabeth Quarter, the enterprise and innovation hub developed by the council.

Planning permission for the police station was granted in December 2024. But construction will be some time yet. A recently published decision log by the Officer of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside (OPCC) included a movement of over £3m intended police capital spend on the new police station from this financial year into 2026/27. This was on the grounds of a “delayed project start”.

An OPCC spokesperson confirmed the 2026 expected start date of construction and why it has been delayed. “The delay has been down to detailed legal discussions on the terms of the collaboration agreement between North Lincolnshire Council and the PCC which have taken longer than expected due to the complexity of the programme.

“We expect terms to be agreed shortly and design works can be completed and build contracts issued with commencement early summer 2026.” The build itself is now also expected to take 74 weeks, two more weeks than previously estimated, which would result in completion in late 2027. However, this 74 weeks duration is subject to change on the finalisation of design.

An OPCC decision log in February 2024 detailed plans for £13.8m police capital spend on the project in future, with a possible £4m Government-grants Towns Fund cash from the council too. The council were to sell the new police station site in exchange for acquiring off Humberside Police its existing station site in Corporation Road, Scunthorpe, the Magistrates Court, and Shelford House.

This was to be subject to finalised costs and due diligence. The new station’s facilities will include an interview room, a gym, kitchen, rest rooms and a mix of open plan and individual offices.

It will not have a custody suite or holding cells. For any Scunthorpe area arrests, individuals will be taken to custody suites in neighbouring police stations.
