New Labour group leader chosen in North East Lincolnshire
It's after Councillor Kath Wheatley stepped down
A new Labour Group leader has been chosen in North East Lincolnshire.
They will be the lead opposition speaker on the council, as Labour is the largest opposition party group. The election follows Cllr Kath Wheatley (West Marsh Ward) standing down as group leader, and Cllr Sheldon Mill (South Ward) stepping down as the deputy group leader.
This week, the North East Lincolnshire Labour Group elected Cllr Emma Clough as their new group leader, and Cllr Karl Wilson (West Marsh) will take on the role of deputy leader.
Cllr Clough represents Heneage Ward and was only elected to the council at last year’s local elections. She is also a caseworker in Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes MP Melanie Onn’s office. Cllr Clough has also previously worked for organisations such as Navigo and the youth offending service, as well as at various local schools.
On being selected as the new group leader, Cllr Clough said: “I am delighted to be taking over from Cllr Wheatley as leader of Labour Group. I would like to thank Cllr Wheatley and Cllr Mill for their dedication over their time in their respective positions.
“North East Lincolnshire is my home, it is where I raised my family and lived for my whole life. Like many residents, I want our area to succeed – not just be known as those towns at the end of the A180, but harness our true potential. We have seen time and time again residents feeling that they are shut out from the decision-making process and ignored by our council.
“As the Leader of the Labour Group, my principal responsibility is you, the residents and making sure your voice is heard – to put forward a vision of hope and prosperity for our town and villages.”
She added she looked forward to the challenge.
