A driver who caused the death of a motorcyclist during a dangerous manoeuvre in Thorne has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

Jack Garwell, 24, of Hilton Avenue, Scunthorpe, collided with 20-year-old Alex Anderson while performing a three-vehicle overtake on High Levels Bank in January 2024.

Travelling at speeds estimated to be over 80mph in a 60mph zone, Garwell veered onto the opposite side of the carriageway, where he struck Anderson head-on.

Alex was thrown from his motorcycle and died at the scene due to catastrophic injuries.

Garwell pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving during his hearing and was sentenced yesterday, 28th November 2025, at Sheffield Crown Court.

The court heard how Garwell was driving to Doncaster for a ‘date night’ when the fatal collision occurred.

Handing down the sentence, HHJ Judge Jeremy Richardson KC sentenced Garwell to three years and six months in prison and disqualified him from driving for five years, with an additional extension period of 21 months.

Serious Collisions Unit Sergeant John Taylor expressed condolences to Alex’s family, who are being supported by police officers.

“Our thoughts remain with Alex’s family, friends, and everyone who knew him," Taylor said.

“Garwell made a decision that has devastated lives, including his own as he now faces a prison sentence.

"Poor judgement and a dangerous overtake cost an innocent man his life.

"A couple of minutes, arriving late at wherever you’re heading to is not worth risky and irresponsible driving. You think it won’t happen to you, but it can happen to anyone, and you will be held responsible for your actions.

“I hope today’s sentencing brings closure to Alex’s loved ones.”

Alex’s family has asked for privacy as they mourn.
